A transparent comparison

MyDirection vs Stella

Two genuinely different answers to the same problem. One of them is probably wrong for you.

The short answer

Stella centres personalized narrated manifestation stories and affirmations, an immersive and largely audio experience. MyDirection centres an adaptive vision board tied to one daily action, reflection and evidence. If you want emotional immersion, choose Stella. If you want the board to change what you do today, choose MyDirection.

01

What this comparison is, and what it is not

Disclosure. This page is published by MyDirection, which makes one of the apps discussed. Our review method and conflict policy explains how we handle that.

This is a comparison of two approaches, based on each product's public description of itself as of August 2026. It is not a hands-on scored review. Under our method we do not describe an app as tested unless a named person used a stated version for at least seven consecutive days, and that has not happened here.

Practically, that means you should treat what follows as a guide to which kind of product suits you, and check the current specifics (pricing, platforms, features and privacy terms) on each vendor's own listing before deciding. Both change more often than comparison pages get updated.

02

Two different theories of what helps

The interesting thing about these two products is that they disagree about the mechanism, not just the interface.

Stella's approach is immersive and affective. Personalized narrated stories and affirmations are designed to make a desired future feel emotionally present. The theory is that vividness and emotional connection are what carry a goal, and that if you can feel the future clearly enough, motivation follows.

MyDirection's approach is behavioural and evidential. The imagery supplies the pull, but the product is organised around what you do next, one action sized to finish today, a short reflection on what happened, and an accumulating record. The theory is that a goal is carried by a record of movement rather than by the strength of a feeling.

Neither theory is complete. Emotional connection without action is where most vision boards die. Action without emotional connection is a task list, and task lists have their own high abandonment rate. Which one you should buy depends on which half you are currently missing.

03

Choose Stella if

  • You respond strongly to audio, and a narrated piece does more for you than a written line.
  • The thing you are missing is emotional connection to the goal, not clarity about the next step.
  • You want something you can listen to while walking, commuting or falling asleep.
  • You want a practice that is largely passive, something that works on you rather than requiring input.
  • You need Android, or want the same product across platforms.

That last one is a straightforward disqualifier for us. MyDirection is iPhone and Apple Watch only, and if you or the people you share a practice with are on Android, this is not a close comparison.

04

Choose MyDirection if

  • You have had a vision board before and watched it go quiet by February.
  • The thing you are missing is the bridge between the vision and today's decisions.
  • You want the board to change based on what you actually do, rather than staying fixed.
  • You want an explicit choice between on-device writing and cloud personalization, decided before you write.
  • You want your direction on a widget and on your wrist, not only inside an app.
  • You would rather have three minutes a day for a year than an immersive twenty-minute session you stop doing.

If you read both lists and the first one described you better, take the first one. We would rather you used a product that fits than churned out of ours in month two.

We have deliberately left Stella's current pricing and free-tier status as "check current listing" rather than reproducing figures we have not verified this week. Pricing in this category changes frequently, and a wrong number about a competitor is worse than no number.

06

How the privacy question differs

Both products personalize, which means both need something from you. The structural difference is in whether the choice about how that content is handled is made explicit.

Stella's public position is that the details you provide are used to personalize your experience and are not sold or used for advertising. That is a reasonable position and it is the industry norm for a cloud-personalized product.

MyDirection adds a mode choice made before you write anything, between private writing that keeps supported generation on your iPhone and secure cloud personalization. Photo images are never uploaded for generation in either mode, and generation requests are sent with training disabled and zero retention. The trade is that private writing produces more repetitive language.

Whether that difference matters depends entirely on what you plan to write about. Apply the checklist to both, and to us. Our own answers are on the privacy page.

07

A quicker way to decide between them

If the comparison table has not settled it, this usually does. Answer based on your real habits rather than your aspirations.

  1. Think about the last goal you abandoned. Did it fail because you stopped caring about it, or because you cared and never converted that into action? Stopping caring points to Stella. Caring without acting points to MyDirection.
  2. Consider how you consume things. Do you finish podcasts and audiobooks, or do you start them and drift? Audio-led products depend entirely on this.
  3. Check your appetite for daily input. MyDirection needs a step and a reflection from you every day, even if the reflection is one tap. If that already sounds like a chore, an immersive product will suit you better.
  4. Look at your phone. If you already ignore your Lock Screen widgets, the glanceable-surface argument is worth less to you than it is to most people.
  5. Check what your phone supports. On-device generation needs recent hardware and a supported language. If yours has it and you often write somewhere without a signal, that is worth weighting; if not, a cloud mode that disables training and retains nothing will serve you just as well.
08

You can also use both

This is not a category where you must pick one tool for life, and the two products barely overlap. A reasonable combination is an audio-led product for the emotional connection on a commute, and a practice-led product for the daily action and reflection.

The cost is two subscriptions, which is a real objection. If you can only justify one, the useful question is which half you are missing. People who have abandoned three vision boards usually do not need more emotional vividness. They need the bridge to a decision. People who have a spreadsheet of goals and no motivation to open it usually need the opposite.

Common questions

Is MyDirection or Stella better?

Neither, generally. Stella is stronger for immersive audio and emotional connection to a goal; MyDirection is stronger for turning a vision into a daily action with reflection and evidence. They are solving different halves of the same problem.

Does Stella have a free version?

Check Stella's current App Store listing. We do not reproduce competitor pricing we have not verified in the last week, because it changes frequently.

Is MyDirection available on Android?

No. It is iPhone and Apple Watch only, because it depends on Apple's on-device model, native widgets and watchOS.

Which is more private?

MyDirection makes the generation route an explicit choice before you write, which is a structural difference rather than a claim. Both of its modes keep your writing out of model training. Verify either product against the checklist rather than taking a vendor's word.

Can I use both apps together?

Yes, and they barely overlap. An audio-led product for emotional connection on a commute, a practice-led product for the daily action and reflection. The objection is two subscriptions, which is a real one.

Which is better for beginners?

It depends on what you are missing. If you have never held a goal long enough to act on it, the immersive route may build the connection first. If you have plenty of motivation and no follow-through, the practice route is the one addressing your actual problem.

Have you actually tested Stella?

Not under our review method. No named tester, stated version and seven-day minimum. This page compares publicly described approaches and says so.
